The term CBD oil has been used extensively in recent years and still has some stigma attached to it from the ill-informed. If you have found yourself reading this post, we are assuming that you are open to new ideas and have taken the first step to find alternative ways to improve your dog’s anxiety.
What is CBD oil?
CBD stands for cannabidiol, a compound found in hemp and cannabis. CBD oil typically does not contain THC, which is the psychoactive compound in marijuana. Traditionally, there has been minimal research into CBD oil’s effects on dogs or pets in general. However, anecdotal evidence is incredibly promising. Due to the limited side effects of CBD oil, it seems well worth trying if your pet has symptoms of anxiety.
What are anxiety symptoms in dogs?
Your dog often communicates with nonverbal cues, so you need to be mindful and watch for signs of anxiety, which can vary from one dog to another. Common anxiety triggers in dogs include fireworks, thunder, visits to the vet or groomer, and being separated from their owner. With so many of us working from home, we can only assume that anxiety levels in our pets will increase once we get safely back into the office. Anxious behaviors will frequently manifest as one or a combination of the following:
- Being easy spooked
- Flattened ears
- Shrinking down or having their tail between their legs
- Vomiting or excessive drooling
- Running away
- Excessive panting
- Being destructive
- Being clingy
- Excessive barking
- Shaking or quivering
How can CBD oil help improve your dog’s anxiety?
CBD oil has been shown to decrease anxiety in dogs caused by their common triggers. This oil works on dogs similar to humans in that the CBD binds to endocannabinoid receptors. This can produce a calming effect, but does not in any way get your dog ‘high.’ Your dog’s anxiety may be improved by:
- Decreased pain and inflammation
- Improved appetite and metabolism
- Improved sleep cycles and mood
In addition to assisting with the relief of anxiety in your dog, CBD oil can have notable benefits for your dog’s immune system, such as reducing pain and relieving skin irritations. If your dog is not feeling well, this can cycle back to increasing anxiety.
Are there any side effects to giving a dog CBD oil?
There is little scientific research on the effects of CBD for dogs, but we do know how humans react to CBD oil, and with both being mammals, it can be assumed that the side effects are similar and include:
- Sleepiness, which can be attributed to the calming effect.
- Lowered blood pressure
- Increased thirst due to dry mouth
Dog anxiety is a genuine psychological issue, and there is even an entire month dedicated to raising awareness on the issue. If you notice your dog manifesting symptoms of anxiety, it is best to speak to your veterinarian about treatment options. Bring up the use of CBD oil and get an accurate dosage suggestion based on your dog’s current weight and anxiety level.
